Black Rhino Landscape Conservation

Grantee Frankfurt Zoological Society
Type Protected Area Management
Grant Amount $200,000
Duration 2 years

Critically Endangered black rhinos face an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. Frankfurt Zoological Society’s partnership with the Zambian Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) created the North Luangwa Conservation Program (NLCP). This program protects and manages an operational area in North Luangwa National Park (NLNP) as well as surrounding game management areas. NLNP’s black rhino population was poached to extinction in the 1990s, but they were reintroduced in the 2000s. This population of black rhinos are currently the only black rhino population in all of Zambia. With RRF support, the NLCP will secure this population and maintain a ‘zero poached’ status through an integrated landscape approach with multiple stakeholders.
