Data Shows South Africa’s Private Parks are Better at Preventing Poaching

A study in South Africa shows that there was a drastic decline in rhino poaching incidents last year. This good news was coupled with another interesting fact—private parks are doing a better job at protecting rhinos from wildlife criminals than national or provincial parks. Causes for the lower effectiveness of government-run area integrity efforts include insufficient budgets and ineffective and inflexible procurement processes, as opposed to the more flexible and self-organized ability of reserves run by the private sector.

The RRF supports several private South African NGOs that support the management of rhino conservation on provincial reserves, including Wildlife ACT, Project Ranger, and Care for Wild.
