Rhino poaching in South Africa has hit alarming levels, with over 8,000 rhinos being poached in the last decade. The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) province in South Africa is an important landscape for rhinos as it has the second highest population of both black and white rhinos. The RRF is supporting Wildlife ACT’s project in KZN to tackle rhino poaching. Their holistic approach includes “smart fences”—which detect any interference and trigger an anti-poaching response team—a dehorning program to make rhinos less desirable targets to poachers, and community-based conservation programs that educate 400 school children per year.
