Investigating the Illegal Trade of Rhino Horn Across Africa

Grantee Wildlife Crime Prevention and Conserv Congo
Type Tackling Trade in Rhino Horn
Grant Amount $189,500
Duration 2 years

Zambia and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are two countries at the center of wildlife trafficking networks, with the wildlife products like rhino horn and elephant ivory being transported from and through Zambia and DRC to other transit countries. Angola, DRC, Mozambique, and Tanzania have been identified as source countries for ivory poaching and trafficking. Poaching has now extended to rhino populations in Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Namibia. The RRF’s grant to Wildlife Crime Prevention (WCP) and Conserv Congo aims to support evidence-based analysis of the poaching and illegal wildlife trade of rhino horn from source countries and attempt to disrupt poaching and trade through cross border partnerships. In late 2021, the RRF provided an additional grant to support WCP and Conserv Congo’s work in disrupting the trade.
